Can WeChat Messages Be Used as Evidence in China?

WeChat messages can be relevant electronic evidence in China, but screenshots alone may not prove the account holder, completeness or authenticity of the conversation.

Preserve the original electronic record

Keep the original device and account where possible. Preserve the full conversation, profile and account-identification information, relevant files, voice messages, transfers and linked transaction records.

Avoid cropping away dates, account details or surrounding context. Exported or recorded material should show a continuous path through the conversation rather than isolated statements.

Connect the account to the party and transaction

The court may need evidence showing who controlled the account and how the messages relate to the contract, payment and performance. Business cards, mobile numbers, bank records and later conduct can support that connection.

Notarisation or other preservation measures may be appropriate where deletion, denial or device loss is a real risk. The method should be proportionate to the dispute.
